I am writing once again about the summer internship opportunities for reporters, photographers, page designers and copy editors at The Chautauquan Daily this summer.
The official summer newspaper of Chautauqua Institution in southwestern New York, the Daily is a 12-30-page broadsheet, published six days a week. We use no wire service of any kind, but fill our pages with the stories and photographs of 15 reporters and four photographers, which means our staff members have the opportunity to build substantive portfolios. We practice classic community journalism and cover lectures, prominent speakers, special entertainment, performing and visual arts, childrens programming, sports, and religious issues in the Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions.
College journalism students comprise more than half of the editorial staff at the Daily. The multigenerational newsroom has been a training camp for well-known journalists such as investigative reporter Ida Tarbell and current Time magazine editor-at-large Nancy Gibbs. Adding to the prestige of the internship, the Daily now awards the annual Cawcroft Journalism Fellowship to a promising journalist who serves as a reporting intern. The $4,000 fellowship provides the interns salary and assists in housing and travel expenses.
I am looking to hire four designers, four photographers, two copy editors and nine reporters for the upcoming season. I will also be hiring a full-time web editor who will work with our assistant editor to build the Dailys web presence. Please review the attached fliers for more information on the Daily and available internships.
I would appreciate your posting the fliers wherever students might see them and giving the Daily a plug in your journalism courses. I will also be mailing you a packet of materials with more detailed information.
With our outstanding programming at the Institution, an internship at the Daily can provide a unique and rewarding experience for your students.
